What are barriers in ABA therapy?

Barriers in ABA therapy are the things that get in the way of progress. Some affect how a child learns. Others keep a family from getting services.

Learning barriers are part of the assessment. A BCBA looks for things like problem behavior, low motivation, trouble paying attention or relying on prompts, and plans around them first. Access barriers are often harder: waitlists, cost, insurance approvals, staff turnover and distance in rural areas.

Cost is a big one, because ABA bills by the hour. In 2026, the most TRICARE pays in Colorado is $18.67 per 15 minutes of technician time, about $75 an hour. Other insurers pay different rates. Health First Colorado covers medically necessary ABA for members 20 and younger, with each course of treatment approved in advance.
