Can kids without autism go to ABA?
Kids without autism can go to ABA. Its methods are used for ADHD, developmental delays, behavior concerns and other needs, not only autism.
The diagnosis matters most for coverage. Many insurance mandates are written for autism, so a plan may not pay for ABA without one. In Colorado, state-regulated private plans have to cover medically necessary ABA for autism spectrum disorder. Ask your plan what it covers for other diagnoses.
Health First Colorado is different. It covers ABA for members 20 and younger when it’s medically necessary and doesn’t require an autism diagnosis. You still need a referral from a physician, nurse practitioner, physician assistant or licensed psychologist. Not every provider works with children who aren’t autistic, so ask before you book an assessment.
