Why do some people not agree with ABA therapy?

Some people don’t agree with ABA therapy because they believe it can push autistic children to act less autistic instead of supporting who they are.

Many autistic adults have described programs that drilled eye contact, quiet hands and compliance, and some say those programs left lasting stress. Critics also point to ABA’s history, which once included aversive methods, and to programs that run long hours with little input from the child. Supporters say modern ABA is more play-based and built around assent, and that it helps many children communicate and stay safe.

Both views deserve a hearing. When you talk to providers, ask how they choose goals, what they do when a child says no and how your child’s own preferences shape the plan.
