What is the downside of ABA therapy?

The main downside of ABA therapy is the commitment. It can take many hours a week, often for a year or more, and results vary from child to child.

A comprehensive program can fill much of a young child’s week, leaving less time for play, rest and family. The cost adds up too. In 2026, the most TRICARE pays in Colorado is $18.67 per 15 minutes of technician time (about $75 an hour) and $31.25 per 15 minutes of BCBA treatment ($125 an hour). Other insurers pay different rates.

Quality also varies between providers. Poorly run programs have been criticized for putting compliance ahead of a child’s comfort. And Colorado ABA clinics won’t need a state license until August 1, 2027, so checking a BCBA’s certification is up to you.
